Human Rights Voices: Interview with Saba from SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan
SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare, upbringing, and education of orphaned and abandoned children in Pakistan since 1977. Our mission is to provide a loving, caring, and secure home for children deprived of parental care. Our network includes 15 SOS Children’s Villages, 4 SOS Children’s Homes, 13 SOS Youth Homes, 22 Hermann Gmeiner Schools, and 4 Technical Training Centers across the country. We do not facilitate the adoption of children but instead offer sponsorship programs to support their upbringing and education. More information can be found on our website.

Can you tell us about your organization and the human rights issues you focus on?
SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan focuses on the fundamental human right of every child to grow up in a loving and supportive family environment. We address the rights of orphaned and abandoned children by providing them with family-based care, education, healthcare, and opportunities for personal development. Our programs aim to prevent child abandonment, support vulnerable families, and ensure that children without parental care receive the support they need to become contributing members of society.

What inspired you to start (or join) SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan?
The inspiration behind SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan stems from the global vision of SOS Children’s Villages International, founded by Hermann Gmeiner in 1949. Recognizing the plight of children who had lost their families during World War II, Gmeiner established a model of care that provided children with a stable family environment. This compassionate approach inspired me to join SOS Children’s Villages in Pakistan to address the needs of orphaned and abandoned children in our country.
Why is this work so important in today’s world?
In today’s world, many children face the risk of losing parental care due to factors such as poverty, conflict, natural disasters, and social issues. Providing a nurturing environment for these children is crucial for their development and well-being. By offering family-based care, education, and support, we help break the cycle of poverty and neglect, enabling children to grow into self-reliant and responsible adults who can contribute positively to society.

Can you share a particularily impactful experience from your work? What made it significant, and how did it shape your perspective?
One of the most impactful experiences has been witnessing former SOS children return as successful adults to contribute to the organization and society. For instance, some have become doctors, engineers, and educators, often choosing to mentor and support current residents. Seeing these individuals thrive despite their challenging beginnings underscores the effectiveness of our family-based care model and reinforces our commitment to this work.
What are some of the biggest challenges SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan faces?
One of the primary challenges we face is securing consistent funding to support our various programs and facilities. Additionally, addressing the psychological and emotional needs of children who have experienced trauma requires specialized care and resources. Raising awareness about the plight of orphaned and abandoned children and combating societal stigmas also remain ongoing challenges.

What keeps you motivated, despite the challenges?
The transformation we see in the children under our care is a powerful motivator. Watching them grow, succeed in their education, and become confident individuals, instills a deep sense of purpose. The support from our donors, volunteers, and the community further fuels our dedication to continuing this vital work.

What is something you wish more people understood about this type of work? Are there any misconceptions about it?
A common misconception is that providing physical necessities is sufficient for orphaned and abandoned children. While material support is essential, the emotional and psychological aspects of care are equally important. Building a sense of belonging, self-worth, and security through stable relationships and a supportive environment is crucial for the holistic development of these children.

How do you see SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan evolving over the next few years?
We aim to expand our Family Strengthening Programs to prevent child abandonment by supporting vulnerable families. Additionally, we plan to enhance our educational and vocational training initiatives to better prepare our youth for independent living. Embracing technological advancements to improve our operations and outreach is also a key focus for the coming years.
How can people support your work – whether through donations, volunteering, or advocacy?
Individuals can support us by sponsoring a child, making general donations, or contributing to specific projects such as education or healthcare initiatives. Volunteering time and skills, whether in mentoring, tutoring, or organizing events, is also invaluable. Advocating for children’s rights and raising awareness about our mission within your networks can further amplify our impact. More information on how to get involved is available on our website.
